Pour out about one cup of the solution. Leave for 15 to 30 minutes then pour out the rest of the solution and rinse twice with clean water.

Descaling kettles
Dilute 1 to 2 Tbsp of citric acid in 1 litre of water. Fill the kettle and boil briefly. Leave for 30 minutes. Rinse carefully with water.

Descaling washing machines
Pour 6 to 8 Tbsp into the drum and run a 90°C programme. (Without laundry, of course!)

Dissolve 2 to 5 Tbsp of citric acid in 1 litre of hot water. Scrub the areas to be descaled or leave to soak for half a day. Rinse.

Cleaning

Removing stains from tea or coffee cups and vases
Pour 1 to 2 Tbsp into the container, cover with boiling water and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse carefully.

Removing fine films of lime, cement or plaster
Dilute 3 to 6 Tbsp of citric acid in 1 litre of water. Rub with this solution. Rinse with clean water.

Cleaning burnt bases of stainless steel pans
Dilute 12 Tbsp of citric acid in 1 cup of water, heat the solution for a few minutes in the burnt pan and rinse well.

Cleaning chrome, stainless steel, ceramic and plastic surfaces
Dissolve 2 to 5 Tbsp of citric acid in 1 litre of hot water. Rub the surfaces with the solution. Rinse carefully.

Removing rust
Prepare a 10% citric acid solution in a bowl. Place the object to be cleaned (e.g. a key) in the solution over- night. A chemical reaction occurs between the citric acid and rust. Iron oxide (rust) is transformed into a colourless substance which then disappears.
- Never use citric acid on enamel, aluminum or marble or surfaces sensitive to acids.
- Not recommended for old coffee machines, washing machines, and kettles that have been furred up with limescale.
- Never use with bleach.
- Do not mix with other chemicals.
- Do not swallow.
- Once you've eliminated the rust, don't forget to prevent rust from coming back by treating your tool or object and storing it correctly.
